What tone deafness really is

People with good pitch perception can often tell notes apart that differ by only a few hertz in the middle of the range. Reliably catching gaps under about 10 to 20 hertz is a strong result and well within normal. If you can hear differences of a few dozen hertz but not tiny ones, that is completely ordinary and nothing to worry about.

Only struggling to hear large, obvious differences would suggest genuine difficulty, and that is uncommon.

Singing in tune is a separate skill

It is about matching your voice to a pitch you can already hear, which improves with practice, feedback and simple exercises.
