Digit span is the number of digits you can hold in short-term memory and repeat back straight away. It is one of the oldest measures in psychology, and it still turns up in memory research and clinical assessments because it is simple and tells you something real about working memory.
What counts as a good span
For forward recall, most adults manage about seven digits, plus or minus two. That “seven, plus or minus two” figure comes from a famous 1956 paper and has held up well as a rough guide. Reaching eight is above average, and nine or more forward is a strong result.
Backward span, where you repeat the digits in reverse, is usually one or two shorter. A forward span of seven and a backward span of five is a completely normal spread.
Forward versus backward
The two modes measure slightly different things. Forward span is closer to pure storage: how many items you can park in mind for a moment. Backward span adds a manipulation step, because you have to hold the digits and turn them around at the same time. That extra juggling is why it feels harder and why the number is smaller.
The gap between your forward and backward spans is itself interesting. A large gap suggests you store information easily but find it harder to work with once it is in there.
Why one digit at a time matters
Some memory tests flash the whole number at once for a second, which lets you take a mental snapshot. Showing the digits one at a time, in sequence, is the traditional span task. It leans more on holding an order rather than a picture, and it stops you from relying on a quick glance. That makes it a cleaner test of the thing digit span is meant to measure.
How to stretch your span
The single most effective trick is chunking: grouping the stream into small pieces you treat as one. A phone number is easier as three chunks than eleven loose digits, and the same works here. Say the digits to yourself in a steady rhythm, group them in twos or threes, and stay relaxed, since tension eats into working memory.
There is a ceiling, though. You can use your capacity better, but you cannot expand it much. Someone claiming to have trained a span of dozens is almost always using elaborate memory techniques that turn digits into vivid images, not raw span.
