“Remove the AI watermark” is a single phrase covering three different things, and they do not all come off the same way. Before you reach for a tool, it helps to know which kind of mark you are dealing with, because one strips away in a second, one needs a crop, and one cannot honestly be removed at all.
The three kinds of “AI watermark”
When someone talks about an AI watermark on an image, they usually mean one of these.
The metadata tag (C2PA / Content Credentials). This is an invisible record written into the file, not onto the picture. It states the image was made by AI and names the tool. ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly and others add it automatically. It is the most common thing people want gone, and it is the easiest to remove.
The visible logo. Some tools stamp a small mark onto the image, like the coloured sparkle Gemini adds in a corner. That is part of the picture itself, so it is not metadata.
The invisible pixel watermark. Google’s SynthID, used by Gemini and Imagen, weaves a signal directly into the pixels. You cannot see it, and it is built to survive cropping, resizing and compression. This is the one that gets oversold.
What you can remove cleanly
The metadata tag comes off completely. Because C2PA lives beside the pixels rather than in them, stripping the file’s metadata removes the tag without altering a single dot of the image. The same pass clears the stored prompt and seed and any EXIF fields.

Clearing metadata has no effect on it, and we would rather tell you that plainly than imply otherwise.
