How many bundles of shingles do I need?
Work out the roof area, divide by 100 for squares, then multiply by three bundles per square. The calculator scales your footprint by the pitch and adds the waste before the count.
What is a roofing square?
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Standard three-tab and architectural shingles both take three bundles to cover one square.
How does roof pitch change the amount?
A steeper roof has more surface than the ground it sits on. The calculator applies a slope factor from your rise-per-12 pitch, so a 6/12 roof works out about twelve percent bigger than a flat one.
How accurate is the shingle estimate?
It scales your footprint by the pitch and adds waste, which is close for a simple gable roof. Hips, valleys and dormers need more, so treat it as a planning figure, add starter and ridge separately, and confirm with a roofer for a cut-up roof.
