Frequently asked questions
- How many tiles do I need?
- Divide the area you are covering by the footprint of one tile, including its grout joint, then add a waste allowance and round up. This how-many-tiles calculator does the arithmetic for any tile size, so a 100 sq ft floor of 12×12 tiles with 10% waste comes to 110 tiles.
- How much extra should I add for cuts and breakage?
- Ten percent covers cuts and the odd cracked tile on a straight, grid lay. A diagonal or patterned layout, or a room with lots of corners and niches, wastes more, so bump the waste up to about fifteen percent for those.
- How does the grout joint change the count?
- A wider joint means each tile covers slightly more floor, so you need fewer tiles. The calculator adds the joint width to the tile size before counting, which is why a tighter rectified joint bumps the number up a little.
- How do I count tiles by the box?
- Enter the tiles-per-box figure printed on the carton and it divides the total tiles by that, rounding up to whole boxes. Leave it at zero if you are buying loose tiles and only want the piece count.
- How much thinset and grout will I need?
- A 50 lb bag of thinset covers roughly 90 sq ft with a quarter-inch notch trowel, and the grout figure comes from the joint width, tile size and a typical joint depth. Both are planning estimates, so check the coverage on the bag, since a larger notch or deeper joint uses more.
- Can I use it for a wall or backsplash too?
- Yes. Enter the wall area the same way you would a floor, whether that is a shower surround, a backsplash or a feature wall. The tile count works identically; just skip the thinset figure if you are using mastic instead.
