A dog’s pregnancy is short and fast-moving. From one mating to a full litter takes about nine weeks, and a lot changes in that time. Knowing the due date helps you plan the vet visits, adjust her food, and have the whelping box ready before the puppies arrive.
TL;DR: Enter the mating date in the dog pregnancy calculator to estimate the whelping date, the 58-66 day birth window, and a week-by-week timeline.
How the due date is worked out
Canine gestation runs about 63 days. The calculator adds 63 days to the mating date for the estimated whelping (birth) date, then brackets it with a window: 58 days for the earliest likely birth and 66 days for the latest.
The window exists because the mating date is not exactly the conception date. Sperm can survive for several days inside the female, and the egg stays fertile for a window of its own, so the true fertilization day can fall days after the mating. If your vet timed the breeding with progesterone testing, the date from ovulation is more precise than counting from mating alone.
What happens week by week
- Weeks 1-2: Eggs are fertilized and the embryos travel to the uterus. There are no outward signs, so keep her routine normal.
- Week 3: Embryos implant into the uterine lining around days 16-18. Some dogs show a brief dip in appetite.
- Week 4: A vet can often confirm pregnancy by ultrasound from about day 25-28. Eyes and spine begin to form.
- Weeks 5-6: The puppies grow quickly, organs and toes develop, and her abdomen visibly enlarges. Start increasing her food.
- Week 7: Puppy skeletons calcify from about day 45, so an X-ray can now count the litter.
- Week 8: Milk may appear and nesting behavior begins. Set up a quiet whelping box.
- Week 9: Birth is imminent. A rectal temperature drop below about 99°F (37.2°C) usually signals labor within 24 hours.
When to call the vet
A pregnant dog should be under veterinary care throughout. Confirm the dates with your vet, ask about a diet change for the second half of the pregnancy, and call promptly if she seems unwell, strains without producing a puppy, or goes past day 66-68 without labor. Use the dog pregnancy calculator for planning, and let your vet confirm the details.
