Frequently asked questions
- Why does waist-to-hip ratio matter?
- It reflects where you carry fat. Fat around the middle is more strongly linked to health risks than fat on the hips, so the ratio adds information BMI misses.
- What is a healthy ratio?
- The WHO considers risk higher above about 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women, though it is just one of several indicators.
- How do I measure my waist and hips correctly?
- Measure your waist at the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button, and your hips at the widest part of your buttocks. Keep the tape level and snug without squeezing, and stay relaxed rather than holding your stomach in.
