Frequently asked questions

What is the debt snowball method?
You pay the minimum on every debt, then throw any spare money at the smallest balance first. When it clears, you roll its payment into the next smallest. The amount going to debt grows as each one falls, which is where the "snowball" comes from.
Should I use the snowball or the avalanche method?
The snowball clears the smallest balance first for quick wins that keep you motivated. The avalanche targets the highest APR first and costs the least interest. To see the payoff date and total interest for your own debts, run the numbers in the Debt Payoff Calculator on this site.
Can I use this sheet for the avalanche method too?
Yes. The layout is the same either way. For avalanche, just order the rows by APR from highest to lowest instead of by balance, and attack the top row first.
How many payment columns should I choose?
One column holds one payment, so eight columns cover about eight months of tracking on a single sheet. Pick twelve if you expect a longer payoff, or print a fresh sheet when you run out of columns.
