Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?
Multiply the energy your battery needs by your electricity rate, then adjust for charging losses. Charging a 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80% needs about 36 kWh, or roughly 40 kWh from the grid once losses are counted. At $0.17 per kWh that's about $6.80.
Why is the energy from the grid more than the energy added to the battery?
Charging isn't perfectly efficient. AC charging loses roughly 10% as heat in the charger and battery, so you pay for more energy than actually reaches the battery. The efficiency figure captures this, and you can lower it for cold weather or fast charging.
How do I work out the cost per mile?
Divide the charging cost by the range that charge adds, which is the energy stored times your car’s miles per kWh. At about 3.5 miles per kWh, a $6.80 charge that adds 126 miles works out to a little over 5 cents a mile.
Is charging at home cheaper than public charging?
Almost always. Home rates are often two to three times lower than public fast-charging rates, so the same charge can cost far less at home. The comparison above shows the gap for your own numbers.
