Frequently asked questions

How is percent change calculated?
It is the difference between the two numbers divided by the starting number, times 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative one a decrease.
What does "X is what percent of Y" mean?
It tells you what share one number is of another, for example, 30 is 15% of 200. Useful for scores, tips and proportions.
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percent as a decimal. For 20% of 150, multiply 150 by 0.20 to get 30. Pick the percent-of mode above and it does the arithmetic for you.
