Frequently asked questions

How do I compare prices when the sizes are different?
Work out the cost per unit: divide each price by its size, then compare like for like. A $6 bag of 1 kg is $6 per kg, while a $3.50 bag of 400 g is $8.75 per kg, so the big bag is the better deal. This tool does that division for every item at once.
What is a unit price?
It is the price for one standard amount, such as per kilogram, per litre or per item. Shops often print it in small text on the shelf label. Putting every product on the same unit is the quickest way to see which is really cheaper.
Does the bigger pack always cost less per unit?
Usually, but not always. Multi-buys and promotions can make a smaller pack cheaper per unit, and "value" sizes are sometimes priced up. Checking the unit price is the only way to be sure rather than assuming.
Can I compare items sold in different units?
Yes. Pick the measure, then set each item to its own unit, grams for one and kilograms for another, or ounces and pounds. Everything is converted to a shared unit before it is compared, so the ranking is fair.
